And that boys and girls is the problem with DI athletics. People that have no affiliation with the school care more about winning, as they should, than graduation. The sad thing is, due to the money involved the school's listen to these "fans". The NCAA needs to shut down and allow the BCS conferences to turn into what they are, semi-pro sports.

This is the wildest thread I've ever read. Something is posted, a reply is sent, and then the subject goes in a different direction.

Yes, let's deny the thousands and thousands of college kids who get degrees every year from playing sports that opportunity.

It's a noble undertaking you're suggesting Double D, but sadly, we can't all be NAIA level where the kids have a better chance of winning the lottery than going pro in the sport they participate in while in school.

I guess those poor kids at Maryland don't deserve an education since all they did was follow Gary Williams' pleas to come and have 4 years of an informal tryout for the NBA. How corrupt and sad for those guys that they were duped in that fashion.

This is all very self-righteous of you, but the reality is there's nothing wrong with a kid playing D1 level football to get to the pros first and get an education second. When you're one of the best at what you do, you want to hurry up and start doing it as a professional ASAP. Nothing wrong with that.

What does Maryland basketball have to do with your original post about a coach for Miami football??

Re: For those that care...(Miami related)

Back on track here, but I just watched Golden's first presser as Miami HC. I was impressed. He said all the right things.

    1) He said that the kids need to realize that just because you wear the U doesn't guarantee you championships, and he's going to make sure they do.

    2) He said that his #1 priority as HC at Miami was to win national titles...contrary to what some people on this board said. He said from day one, that goes up on the board in the locker room. He said he definitely wants to compete at a high level in the ACC, but that the national title was indeed the ultimate goal from the get-go.

    3) He reached out to Florida HS coaches, saying it was an honor to be their peer in the coaching profession (instead of talking down to them like Shannon would at times do). He assured them that he would do right by them and their kids--they would take care of them should they choose to come to UM, and would go out of his way to clinic with them to make their programs better.

    4) He implored ex-players to come back to the program, to be on the sidelines during games, no questions asked. He invited them to come to every practice they could make, and to come back and let the current players know what it takes to win and win big. He did this several times throughout the presser.

    5) Most impressive moment: A reporter asked the question (paraphrasing) "You went through as a candidate for the jobs at UCLA, Cincy, and Tennessee. You've been rumored to be the defacto coach in waiting at Penn State once Joe Pa retires. So, at this stage in your career...Why Miami? Why now?"

His response (laughing) "Are you kidding me? Really?"

He talks the talk. I want to see a) the staff, b) the finish to the 2011 class, and c) spring ball. After all of that, I will be able to better guage how well he can back up this tough, empassioned talk I saw this evening at the presser.

He was talking about how big of a sham D1 sports is and how it's just semi-pro anyways, even though he's a loyal follower of Terps bball. Just trying to frame the argument to his main following to see how he feels about it.

I have no problem with them going and getting degrees. The problem to me is when an otherwise fine institution (Miami) sells out its academic reputation for football wins. Gary runs a clean program, he stays. Shannon runs a clean program, they would rather cheat and win. Major D1 athletics, including Maryland is a joke. You guys are getting played, and the NCAA is laughing at you guys all the way to the bank.

I really don't understand your reasoning,, if there was an argument, I didn't notice. I just don't understand a lot of your postings.

If/when you get something on him he resorts to trying to hurt the original poster and/or upset the poster into posting irrationally so he can go boom, I got ya! Tis what it is.
